Wrest Park Drainage
The next phase of the watercourse restoration involved further works to improve the hydrology, including extensive drainage works. Over 4500m of existing ditches had to be reprofiled through the historic woodland areas, which were landscaped into Capability Brown’s ‘Woodand Panels’. The ditches crossed through scenic ‘rides ‘designed to provide access through the wooded areas; these had to be protected, with new pipework and headwalls to be constructed and linked to a new outfall into the Broadwater lake.
Access was limited and small excavators with specially adapted ditch profiling buckets were used throughout the wooded areas. Working closely with the archaeologists, historic finds were uncovered and areas reinstated successfully. Access for the public was maintained, with environmental and safety considerations a key priority.
