ICE West Mids Award 2010

Daniels Mill: Winner of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) West Midlands Geotechnical Project Award 2010 and highly commended by Ground Engineering Awards 2011.

Following slope failure after the flood events in Summer 2007, this sensitive earthworks project was undertaken to protect this famous Mill and maintain support to the viaduct abutment of the adjacent historic Severn Valley railway, from further movement of the slope.

With a very restricted site and the need for the Mill to remain open, this was essential. Identifying the right solution to address the slope failure and the selection of an experienced Contractor was essential; the approach to a working partnership and a safe work method were identified as key factors.

The judges were particularly impressed by the close team working and the understanding of the Client's needs in keeping the Mill open. The project was “Thought by the judges to be a very well executed, thoroughly professional job within a constrained site.”
